Internet Almost Unusable, VPN resetting

The firewall cops don't need to read gokm to block VPNs. VPN traffic carries several unique IP signatures (you can read the RFC spec online if you're truly bored), so the carrier need only scan the trillions of IP packets for that unique signature, extract the destination IP address, then block it - or worse - blackhole the traffic. Blocked traffic will issue an error message. Blackholed traffic just times out, which is probably what most of you are experiencing.

@atomic
It might also be part of the the new 'anti-corruption' strategy, hinted at by Mr Xi. Let the netizens flush them out, that way the party is not the poacher and the gamekeeper. If so it is risky, but it is going to come out anyway.

Foreign-run VPNs illegal in China: govt

Three overseas VPN service providers, Astrill, Witopia and StrongVPN apologized Thursday that their service to residents in the Chinese mainland has been blocked due to a recent upgrade of the GWF.

Astrill claimed that most VPN protocols have been blocked, and that many foreign companies have been influenced.

Fang Binxing, designer of the GFW, told the Global Times Thursday he did not know of any upgrade to the firewall. "As far as I know, companies running a VPN business in China must register with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. I haven't heard that any foreign companies have registered," Fang said.

Unregistered VPN service providers are not protected by Chinese laws, and any company running a VPN business should realize they have a responsibility to register, he said.

I am in the US now... feeling like I don't want to bother coming back. Take my wife and dog and GTFO. 9 years in Kunming, but how can you run an online business without un-fettered access to the internet?

So what's the govt run option for VPN...?!? what a friggin' joke!

Anyone using StrongVPN with non-standard settings? Is it working? I managed to tweak it in mid-November and it was working then. How about now.

bummed out on China!

A bit ridiculous if they want every business who uses a VPN in China to register. You may as well register any business in the world that has more than about 50 employees and half that don't. As the world becomes more interconnected and people have to travel more for business (particularly in/out of China) foreign businesses that legitimately use VPNs to secure their networks are essentially illegal in China. Bit of a joke. I guess we are lucky in some ways that the government is lazy to enforce it.

Hey Bobbles, can you help me get on Astrill? So far I have been waiting light years just to access standard scientific journal articles. This country is a joke!
