I am new to Kunming and stumbled upon the Metro supermarket in the north and thought I'd buy some new supplies as i just moved in. After around two and a half hour of shopping, i go to the cashier who then tells me i can't buy anything inmy card unless I provide a membership card. At the information desk, they tell me that providing my passport and workplace business card can get me a card. However I am on long-term studies, so I can't provide them a business card. I haven't talked longer, since my Chinese isn't so good, but I wanted to know if providing a student card will be fine to get a membership card? Anyone here knows?
I only had to present my passport and school name to get a card. When I went there without a card, the person in line behind me just gave the cashier their card and everything was chill. I believe you (they) earn points from each purchase.
a photocopy of a card will often do or just act dumb and use the 'wo ting bu dong' line until they let you through - it doesn't take long! they do have a number that can be used for situations such as cards and numbers that won't work too. usually another customer will let you use their card as mike said.
