I have not tried to fly without my passport.

E-tickets are keyed using your passport number. Your passport is your photo ID. I think you would have a problem.

You can get a receipt from the PSB that confirms you passport is being processed. Fat chance of a school getting or giving you one, student or teacher.

I wouldn't even try to fly without my passport. Hard to get a hotel room when you get there. Ten years in China tells me just hunker down and wait.

Hi,

A friend did this a few months ago, travelling by plane and train all over east China, starting in Kunming and arriving back to Kunming, he had his yellow slip from the PSB,,and a passport copy,,and arrived really early at the airport.

It takes some time but its possible to do.

You need to take those things and get a temporary ID from the PSB in the airport.

I had my passport water damaged while living in Nanjing and had to to make a quick trip to Shanghai to my embassy, to get a new passport.

After arriving in Shanghai, I proceeded to get a hotel room, Motel 186 didn't just refuse my color copy of the damaged one, they called the police on me without telling me. I mean, This was a hotel that I had stayed more than 6 times before in the last 6 months.
The receptionist called this fat manager that then called the police, but didn't tell me that they did this.

My mandarin's not that bad, I realized their aggressivity and paranoia and went out to get a taxi and find a new Hotel, as I had an appointment with my embassy in the morning to retrieve the new passport.

As I looked out of the taxi I then saw 2 police cars arriving at the scene ...

I went to the outskirts of town and found a hotel that accepted me.
Don't play around here in China without your passport, you're gonna get screwed.

I have flown Hainan to kunming, GZ to BJ, SGH to KMG, all just on a Resident book this month, no problems.

Read your resident permit book, its a travel document.

I have flown in China without a passport.

I had to hand in my passport while my new visa was being processed. I told the PSB in Shanghai that I needed to fly, they said no problem and gave me a certified chopped copy of my passport. But I did have to ask for it before I handed over my passport.
The airport accepted this with no problems, as did the hotel.

If you are renewing your passport ask the consulate who is renewing it can provide alternative travel documents. Also ask for a number to call if you need assistance, 24 hr if possible.

Hi TICexpats,

What resident book do you have? How did you get one? I thought they had been phased out years ago ? I am talking about the little green book the PSB used to give out. Is there something else available ?

I'm not sure what TICexpats is referring to, but assume it may be a Foreign Expert Certificate? I've heard of people flying on this certificate before, but haven't tried it myself.

He's referring to a green book that they give you after fives years. It looks like a passport.

I don't think its the PR Resident book, if that was the case he would have a ID card similar to a PRC citizen IC card and use that for travel.

Also I don't think its the Foreign Expert Cert as like a driving licence airports won't accept them.

TICexpats,,can you let me know, its good to know if we can travel easily in China on something other than our passports.
