We lived in Beijing for several years, including during & after the olympics (2008). Beijing was fantastic during the olympics - but shortly after reverted back to sooty smoggy city - depending on where one lives. It's a fantastic metropolitan city - BUT one really needs a car to get around (or a car & driver) for business. The subways are fantastic and generally convenient. And I love the fact that crime - especially petty theft is seriously well controlled in the city.
Kunming has beautiful weather - a reasonably comparable selection of food - so-so shopping - and a seriously rampant petty theft problem - no doubt a result of the general economy and a rather impotent street security force (bodies filling space, sucking air, but not much more). Still - as long as one is careful, alert, the city's weather makes it a fantastic place to raise children - educational issues aside.
So, @crazy - welcome to KM - seems you're on the edge of town based on your other posts - trust you'll enjoy the city and integrate somewhat into the community - we need the taxes.
