The End of Salvador's Wireless

Hey Laotou, I took no offense to you slandering the China Telecom people. They most likely deserve it. I read your post wrong the first time and thought you were calling me a middle management imbecilic moron. And though I can understand the imbecilic moron part, I was struggling to come to terms with the middle management part. That, I might find offensive. But thanks for the nice words in follow up. And as far as those damn rafters go, at least they are padded in the seating area. I've been knocked out twice when wearing a hat in our office where they are not padded.

I was at a Chinese style western restaurant on Lin Yu Lu on Monday (The Greenery?) and they offered wireless service. You did need a password to connect.
Is the issue the password or are restrictions being placed on non-Chinese owned businesses?

As per Colin's note - this issue was raised by China Telecom 3 years ago, when they were cracking down on internet cafes. As Salvadors was obviously getting too successful - China Telecom obviously wanted Salvadors to either shut down the free wifi (ostensibly cuz it was free which means China Telecom was allegedly losing revenue) or ante up the internet cafe fees (not to mention getting a license). The landscape has changed considerably since those heady days.

@colin
AHA! I now know how to push your button - so if we ever have a dispute and I want to escalate it into a personal attack - I'll just accuse you of being "middle management"!

Seriously - why are your staff probably the only happy staff I've ever met in Kunming? Just lucky?

When Ferdinand Magellan, the first person who actually SAID (not merely thought) the earth was round, people ridiculed & laughed at him.

When cellular phones for car installations were first introduced in the USA in 1984, consumers were warned not to go within 2 feet (about 60cm) of the antenna or make sure the antenna is installed at a location outside of the car at least 2 feet away from the occupants of the car. Power rating (Not to be confused with the "SAR" rating referenced in the link below) of the car phones at the time, as I recall, was 2 watts.

Hand held cellular phone power rating is about 1/4 that of the early car phones (and for good reason) and the antenna is located on the "opposite" side of the holes of the ear piece. Even when on standby, the phone still emits & receives radio signals, but at a much lower level than when making a connection and use in conversation. As a precaution, instruction manuals of different manufacturers advise consumers not to cover that part of the phone with the hand when in use.

I'd much rather choose to be safe than sorry. When I carry my phone in my pocket or in a case attached to my belt, I make sure the antenna face of the phone is not facing my body. I believe it is also prudent to avoid being inches away from a phone in use by someone sitting or standing immediately next to you. I also believe in using an ear piece when engaged in a prolonged conversation.

Independent scientific organization ICNIRP and the FCC have set guidelines on safety margins designed to assure the protection of all persons, regardless of age and health. Most manufacturers also tested the Specific Absorption Rate or "SAR" for various models of phone. Before buying your next phone or to see how your current phone rates, check out the link below (and thank "prd34" for raising your level of conscientiousness on the subject):

I put on the loudspeaker and use mine like a walkie talkie, unless I am in a restaurant where it would annoy people.

I confessed upon joining this forum a while back that as a designer obsessed with images, words and spelling are not my forte. I just proved it above with the word "conscientiousness". I really meant to use the word "consciousness". Sorry about that.
