East or West newspapers jest - some of the cringe laden language in this whole saga:
'Remote Yunnan' ( Six million residents, soon to be opened state- of-the-art international airport and various other communication links that equal or surpass many European and North American cities.)
'Stores Discovered' (Glaring, larger than life signage on streets with high-density traffic but still officials 'discover' them; Hey, look, someone dropped an apple!)
The media reporting is comical and make it sound like kids caught scrumping : 'But officer, I discovered these apples laying there in a remote corner of the big, big field'.
What are the odds on no-one having actually done anything illegal? Before you know it Kunming returns to isolation and the lost tribe of 6 million souls will disappear back into the jungle?
The latest news:"Chinese officials have found five fake Apple stores in the southwestern city of Kunming, and ordered two of them to suspend business while they're investigated, a local government website said Monday.
Officials couldn't do anything about the other three stores — which prominently displayed Apple signs and logos — because they did not find any fake Apple products for sale, according to a report by a local newspaper posted on the Kunming city government's website."
The moral of the story is that you can sell real products in fake stores but not fake products in fake stores. Go figure.
Does anyone know whether the 'fake' apple store unearthed a few years ago, specifically the one with the winding stair case, a) still trades and b) its address?
Am doing some uni research on intellectual property in China and would love to see it first hand for myself. Cheers
Not sure about address, but it should still be open, as even though many have closed, most of the larger group new have stayed in business. Incidentally, closures have nothing to do with IP, mostly because too many had opened and the iPhone no longer dominates China smartphone market share.
The interesting thing is that while the stores are fake, the product is real.
There is a large fake Apple store on the corner of East Ring Rd and DongFengDongLu. It has a nice shiny Apple logo and employees in blue shirts. No winding staircase, and the products are real like AndrewD mentioned
