Can anyone recommend a place to buy train tickets other than the train station? Any hotels that sell them or travel companies?

There is a small train ticket office on Kunshi Lu (昆师路) - Kunshi Lu doesn't have any street signs, it is the first road on your right as you walk downhill on Jianshe Lu from its intersection with Wenlin Jie. After turning onto Kunshi Lu, walk about 75-100 meters until you find an alley on the left (south) side of the road. about 15 meters into the alley you should find a train ticket office on the left (east) side of the alley. Usually there aren't many people in line there, if there is a line at all. Good luck!

Besides the train sation, you can buy them in travel companies as well. The tickets are only open for sale 6-10 days before departure, in some high seasons, it's very hard to get the train tickets to Dali, Lijiang for example.

Here is a company who sells train tickets, the staffs speak English, they bring the tickets to airport upon your arrival or the hotel which you stay, you may book tickets online and price is reasonale as well.

For all those who hang around the Universities, there's a convenient ticket seller (a branch of the railway company) just in Wenchang Xiang (文昌巷), an alley on 121 street. Coming from WenHua Xiang, just cross the bridge over 121 street, and the office is just UNDER the bridge.
