Anyone watching the Royal Wedding tomorrow?

If it's anything like the wedding of Diana and Charles, then you'll be in for treat; Parading through London in gold encrusted horse-drawn carriages, guards and officials dressed in lavish robes, and diamond encrusted everything. In a word: obscene. Even more so considering the current state of the UK. Remind me again what purpose the royal family serves?

Pray tell... what is their purpose? What do they do? Bit of charity work here and there... bit of travelling around the world in the name of keeping good relations with the commonwealth... bit of skiing... bit of hanging around the palace... um... yeah, all in all, they're essential for Britain.

For Mehnyaa: which side do you think live "on trees" - the ones who think royalty is a thing of birth or otherwise?:

Neither Pro nor anti monarchists are ignorant.

For my part I would prefer to be alive and swinging from trees in ignorant bliss than laying in a pool of my own blood after attempting to get rid of an all powerful alternative. Recent polls in the UK suggest that two out of every three, across all age ranges, are content with the status quo and this even extends into republican minded Scotland. Very few of these are starry eyed monarchists. Furthermore, referendums in large Commonwealth countries failed to remove Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, although this must surely change next time round.

As to the purpose of the monarchy, the answer from many of us ignorant monkeys will simply state that a monarch, along with all their faults and eccentricities, seems ok when you look at some alternatives who have, do, or could wield considerable power:

George Bush

Berlusconi

Tony Blair

Margaret Thatcher

clapped out pop stars, film stars, big brother celebrities

puppets with billionaire friends.......

and of course it gets worse, much much worse, as you glance around the middle-east.

No one would create a monarchy today since there are viable and flourishing alternatives, but those who've got them, it seems there is no majority out on the streets wanting to lay down their lives to get rid of them. If and when the day comes when the majority turn against these powerless, ceremonial heads of state, then it will be done at the ballot box rather than at the end of loaded guns. So, living on a tree in ignorant bliss is 'relatively' sweet, whichever side of the argument you are on.

The wedding is nearly over and so I'll look up the South Park episode. Any links?
