Temporary drivers licence in Yunnan

Is it possible to get a temporary drivers license for Yunnan in Kunming? I know it is possible in Sichuan where you can get such a license for 90 days.

Temporary drivers' license is not a myth, it does exist. have a look here

Last post in the thread says officials in various offices never heard of such a thing, but that was two years ago. Maybe it's your turn to run around to different beaurocracies in Kunming to find out what's the status for 2011!

Very interesting, thanks for posting. Would be interesting if anyone could figure out how to do that in Kunming.

Interesting indeed.

However, it looks like the only difference in status is that you don't need to be a resident in China. It may be that you still need to take the theory test for Chinese driving regulations, the info provided in the links suggests this is the case.

If I am correct, then you can get a temporary driving licence if you have some purpose to drive, part of a tour perhaps. I assume then you would be in a hired or borrowed vehicle.

For most of us, who have a temporary certificate of residence from the local police, the temporary drivers licence offers no advantages over the permanent one.

Although one of the posts in China moto, suggested it was to buy a motorcycle in another province. This is a way of buying larger engined motorcycles, I have seen 1000cc sports bikes in China (not legal in Shanghai but I have seen them with other province plates).

"Temporary drivers' license is not a myth, it does exist. have a look here"

As somenick goes on to hint at, "exist" is a tricky word in this situation. If the KM bureaucrat whose job it theoretically is to issue the license is too ignorant, lazy, incompetent or some combination thereof to actually issue it, then does it exist?

In 1995 I have got my "Temporary Driving Licence 证号 950017" which was valid one year. I passed my driving test while speeding in an old black Volga throughout Kunming, scaring the two examiners almost to death. No theory test needed, because I was totally illiterate these days. I am still embarrassed and I am thankful for everybody who helped me through the procedures, however I will not disclose any details.

You can get bigger bikes in Kunming. There is a guy with a bunch of them off Dianchi Lu, but they are not allowed into the city, apparently.
