Spent a fun weekend here. The town has lots of nooks and crannies to explore. The temples are worth climbing to (though they all require tickets now) and Heijing has really managed to retain its genuine, lived-in, nature - very few tourists around. A real gem of Yunnan IMHO.
Has GoK ever done an article on Heijing? I couldn't find anything on the search function?
I think you should write it. :)

No need for reservations. You can find a place when you get there unless you go there during Golden Week.
thanks. Im going there 2morrow, so hope its not going to be crazy there.
I went there in May a few years ago. I could not find a place to stay at all because it was jammed packed.
I had to go out of Heijing and found a nasty room with no bathroom in a small village.
Rule # 1 - Never travel during any Golden Weeks.
For the record - May(ish) is Golden Week across most of Asia (to include Japan).
@laotou: probably has origins in the near-universal recognition of the onset of Spring in the northern hemisphere. Other time of widespread 'golden weeks' is Autumn - agriculture, animal migrations, etc. Not only Asia.
Quick report: Im just here and I have to say, the place is busy. Room 150 rmb. I met some Chinese students they couldn't find anything cheaper then 220 rmb. ( double bed room ). Still its not that mad like Dali or Litjiang, but I wouldn't like to be here for the spring fest alright. Also prices for food are touristic level. I believe during the week or just normal weekend can be much more relaxing.
You're right Alex. Outside of National Holidays it's quite a cheap place to stay.
