Are then any good cardiology units in KMG?

I met a cardiologist, Chinese guy, in Jinghong, who spoke excellent English. He said the "first affiliated hospital" has a cath lab and is the best bet in Kunming.

I think he was US trained. He does come to Kunming once a week ? to perform procedures.

During our discussion he pretty much said having a hearth attack in Kunming is bad news. After talking to some local doctors, I tend to agree. Every single one wanted me to trash the western meds and go on herbal stuff.

I go to Beijing 3 - 4 a year, Beijing Union Hospital, to see a cardio guy and buy meds. I can't get the rat poison in either 2, 3, or 6mg tabs here in Kunming.

Yan'an hospital has a good cardio unit, but you may have a problem finding an English speaking doctor there.

My wife had to go there recently to treat a blocked artery (which doctors in Toronto failed to diagnose) but the blockage was so close to the heart they brought in a top specialist from Guangzhou.

On the downside, their toilet facilities suck!

Was Yan'an expensive?

I guess that depends on how you define expensive.

seeing the doctor is pretty cheap (about 6 yuan). Blood tests and ultrasound can be a few hundred. CT scan was 1,600 if I remember correctly.

Hospitalization for 8 days and two times in surgery for angiography and insertion of the stent was over 35,000.

to put things in perspective I need to give you another set of costs.
I spent my own 8 days at Yan'an hospital last October with a requirement for abdominal surgery to replace a "patch" on an incision hernia (which required removing the patch placed in Toronto and putting in a new one). I was 7 hours in surgery and recovery so it was not a small procedure.

Total cost for lab,CT scan, hospital room, medication and surgery was just over 17,000 Yuan. I guess this shows the price can depend on what is happening.

I saw that St Johns' Hospital on DianChi Lu has huge sign on it saying Cardio Hospital,,not sure what its like.
