Racism in Kundu

They'd better just ban all indecently drunk crazy fools from coming in, not making it a racial question. Everybody, Chinese or foreign, goes crazy sometimes in nightclub-situations and it is the security people's job to prevent this. But unfortunately that kind of people tend to simplify these problems into racial issues. That is a global phenomenon.

Still, in this case I tend to agree with the poorly nuanced but ultimately true comment of bucko earlier.

I think most of the clubs complained about foreigners who come there and mostly get invited by all chinese girls and guys and finally don't spend any money, that's the reality of backpacking in kunming, and these clubs are supposed to be for people not scared by spending a bit of money when they go out...i think it has nothing to do with racism..every club, back home as well, has the right to decide who fits the place or not without giving any politically correct explanation, you can try to come there dressed up to appear reacher hehe i'm sure reaction will be different...enjoy!

I think it's less racism, more that if/when another foreigner gets seriously hurt or even killed, it brings much more negative publicity and unwanted attention to the club involved than it would a local. Understandable really. That said, can you imagine the reaction in most western countries if they decided to ban people based on their nationality? Uproar.

"Chinese people care about their face and I saw so many drunk but never dare to pee on DJ mix tables, just because they disagree with music

Having run a bar in China for over 5 years I've got to disagree with you "tiger" I've had Chinese customers vomit, fight, steal, piss in the wrong place, molest, cause trouble and any other type of antisocial behavior as much as anyone else. So-called Chinese" face" doesn't seem to prevent any of this despite what you claim.

As to your "(Unlike foreigner who always know better what good music is)." Seems you have some issues to deal with my boy.

tiger1986, it's not that foreigners behave any worse than locals, it's that when they do it, it really stands out. If you're local, you either get your ass seriously beaten, or you're way too important to be messed with.

When a foreigner does something disrespectful or stupid, people just say, "oh, these foreigners". No one seems to notice the ones who just buy some drinks and have a good time.

Besides, if they banned the locals too, then who is left?

Next time you're in Kundu, take a good look around. Drugs, prostitutes, fake whiskey, money laundering... The people who behave themselves are the exception, not the rule.

recently there was a pretty serious fight between two foreigners in kundu that caused quite a stir. That might have something to do with it. Clubs banning foreigners has happened before; it's a temporary measure. Foreigners are still quite a novelty, and bring in customers, so no club will ban them for long.

And while it's true that foreigners often have drinks bought for them, rather than fork out their own cash, it's all the same to the club. A bottle sold is a bottle sold, it makes no difference who actually drinks it.

I dont even know where the bar in Top one is (and Ive been there a couple of times), but the money Chinese people spent there to buy beer for me and friends is probably enough to compensate that.

On one point I sadly have to agree with tiger1986, we probably suffer from a very bad image and that actually for a reason.
some foreigners seem to see Partying in China as an open invitation to behave as complete assholes. i have no idea how those people party back home, but Ive seen some pretty poor behaviour around Kundu, especially from guys who wouldnt back off from Chinese girls, even though they made their *no* pretty clear.

On the other hand, the moment Ive see real fighting its always been Chinese people, sometimes foreigners to step in between and help.
Chinese (drunk) fighting seems to be way more serious to me than what i know from back home. unfortunatly there will always be fights when people get drunk and agressive, but in 20 years back home ive never seen a girl (lying on the floor, not moving) beeing kicked by a guy, which ive witnessed after only three month in kunming.

Discrimination at clubs is not something that only exsists in China. Diffrent clubs want diffrent customers. Soho and Babi specialise on rich customers and that's why they let their customers pay ridiculous amount of money. The goal of most customers at those places is not to have fun, but to 有面子。They buy as much as fits on the table. Then they give some of it to other people to show that they are so wealthy that they can give it away (kaizi), and if they are seen with a foreigner it's even better. They give foreigners booze and the foreigner give them face. So in general the clubs like foreigners (This is why some clubs hire foreigers to come and party). However this only works as long as the foreigner behave, they look ok and aren't too many.

What happend at Soho was that a group of five guys (that according to Chinese standard weren't very attractive) had a rutine of going into Soho begging for drinks. Taking a round. Standing in the corner waiting. Walking another round and then leaving if they weren't getting enough to drink. Never talking to any of the people giving them alcohol. So I wasn't too surprised when the guards started stopping all foreigners.

And I agree with Esther, the "negative" discrimination has a reason. If you piss on the DJ table you will obviously get into trubble. If you are always begging for drinks, getting shit faced, without even trying to be nice (unless you are a girl with big eyes, nose and death pale skin) they will stop being nice to you after a while and start finding you annoying.

Yes Chinese people fight. Most seemed to prefere to be ten against one. Especially kicking on that one person that is lying down. Of you happend to be alone the most common tactic seemed to be hitting a glass bottle in the other persons head when that person was turning around. Chinese people are more agressive and unreliable when they get drunk. However they scarcly ever fight in the club because then they would be kicked out and loose face.

Chinese people are a bunch of cowards.

99% of them do not stand a chance against a 200lb foreigner who has some training in boxing or martial arts.
