I got an infected root canal last autumn and flew from Sweden to KM to fix it. The cost is so much lower than here in Sweden, that I basically got a free vacation...
I had it done at Huiying Dental Clinic. They speak english well enough. They have an ad here on GoKunming (thats how I found them). www.gokunming.com/en/microsites/huiying/
I didnt get a "real" crown, as I didnt think it is needed, since I dont eat much "hard food" as the dentist put it (gnawing on bones and such), but settled for a crown made of the normal plastic used for modern fillings. I am happy with it and my dentist here in Sweden thought it looked ok on inspection. He had himself done the same type of "faux-crown" on another tooth for me a decade ago and its still fine.
So, root canal therapy and the simple "crown" (they can do real crowns and the most expensive / best quality one is actually made in Sweden).
I had 4 roots and it took a bit of work to find them. They called in a specialist for it. The whole job landed on a grand total of 560 RMB... yes, five hundred sixty RMB. But as I said, I opted out on a "real" crown. Mind you, the real crowns are _much_ (a few thousand) more expensive if you opt for that, but I am happy with my plastic faux crown.
When I got back home, my ordinary dentist wanted to look and x-rayed the tooth. His only objection was that he said the drill holes where a bit on the thin side for his taste, but had nothing to complain about. I guess the Chinese maybe have smaller teeth / thinner roots, so the dentist uses more delicate drilling there.
I can also add that the job on me was done in relative haste, as I had to catch a flight back home to Sweden. So given that he wanted more time than I gave him, they did a very good job.
So, I would not hesitate in recommending you to go to them and have them check you out and give you an estimate. You can tell him I sent you with my regards (Swedish middle-aged man with red beard and long red ponytale hair).
To make it a bit more clear, it was November 09 that I had it done. So the price is fairly up-to-date and they will remember me. :)
Sorry for the late reply ... might help another one searching to have another option/opinion.
We have used Wei Mei on Xi Ba Lu between Xi Chang Lu and Huan Cheng Xi Lu. We used a couple of women dentist who are very kind, very gentle, and trained in America. Their phone number is 4109170 — woman who answers the phone (usually) speaks Kunminghua and no English. We don't use any other dentist in Kunming after finding them. They're professional, well-trained, reasonably priced, and gentle.
The dentist pernordin talks about is my good friend. Hie name is Li Ying and was trained in England. He has had a private practice here over 5 years, and his speciality is crowns and orthodontics. He does good work.
Is the Sandra92 post really an ad for a dentist in Torrance, California or are my eyes deceiving me? Spammers have no shame.
I've used Shu Hui Dental Clinic 署晖 on Xin Wen Road 29号新闻路 for simpler things and been satisfied with the service. Prices a little high.
Had a complicated root canal, post and crown done in Shenzhen last year. If you want details, let me know.
I had a good experience, a couple years ago, with the dental hospital ("Stomatology Hospital) at the Kunming Medical School on Renmin Lu. They have some English speaking dentists. I forget the price, but a couple thousand rmb for a complete crown, of gold covered with porcelain. No pressure to get the most expensive option.

Dr Yang is fantastic, better than any dentist I have ever been to in the USA or UK.
Brilliant and very professional
I used the Huiying Dental Clinic for some emergency work and will go back. Dental work can be a tricky issue in China. They were polite enough and he did the work even though he did not have me scheduled. I basically him told I had to have the work done, I was in pain and did not want to go home and take anti-biotics for three or four more days. I forget the Dr''s name but he worked it out with me and I had the work done. He spoke good English.
He also used lots of Novocaine! It was all painless. Some places here don't like to use it unless it is, in their view, a major procedure. I forget the price but it was a bit higher than lots of the clinics or dental schools, but I will go back. One like I liked too was that there were a couple private rooms and I requested one and got it. Went to another place recommended by a friend and left after Is aw it it was a row of chairs with no privacy and the waiting area was basically mixed in with patients. One lady was taking cell phone pics of a guy getting work done. Did not experience that at Huiying Dental Clinic.
One thing I found here -and this may be fairly universal in China- was that after the Novocaine wears off you had better have some good Western strength pain killers at home. They do not seem to think people need strong pain killers like codeine or Vicodin here. They really fear pain killers or something. "Oh, too strong!" Luckily I had some Excedrin PM and it knocked out the pain and later that day I was feeling okay.
