Has anyone on here ever taken any Chinese classes at YNNU?

If so, what did you think about the quality of instruction? Did you learn a lot or was it a waste of time?

Also, what was your opinion about the instructors? Were they friendly?

I have heard of classes being useful here at YNNU, but. after a year of Chinese classes, I would have to say that the majority of them...are a waste of time and money. (thankfully it wasn't my money ;) )

My first semester I felt 1/4 classes was actually worth attending with the other 3 having teachers who did not much more than stand in front of the class and ramble on...this semester half my classes are okay...not great, but I feel like if I attend them, I may have the chance of learning something.

I have heard that the one on one classes are much more beneficial and if I came back here (which, to be honest I never would...) I would definitely opt for the 1-on-1 vs the traditional, waste your time, classes...

I'm taking classes at YNNU now as well, and my experience has been better than brenna's. I took classes at ChuanDa (Chengdu) several years ago, and compared to that, the teaching quality here is much better. Class size is also pretty small (most classes have around 10 students; mine have between 6 and 8).

I do think everything really does depend on your teachers though! You may be lucky like me! From what classmates say, I would estimate that at least half of the teachers are adequate/good. Also, I am only taking 3 (out of the 4 possible) classes. I would recommend only signing up for 2 or 3 classes; you can try all 4 the first few weeks and see which ones you like/don't like before you decide which to stick with.

I also think that regardless of how good your teachers are, a lot of learning happens outside of the classroom. I often feel that my classes aren't helping me speak better, but they do provide a framework for practicing. As I've said, I've been lucky with teachers and I wouldn't consider my classes a waste of time.
