I am searching to make friends with people residing in Kunming. Friendly intelligent conversation. Smart comments from snarky people will be ignored.

I need to clarify. I am still in the United States waiting for the sale of my house. I have 4 QQ chat friends in Kunming. They are working when I am relaxing. I am interested in making more friends

@happyjack
Most Chinese use WeChat now. QQ use to be the choice of most Chinese in the mainland.

If you'd like to make somewhat normal Chinese friends - look at Toastmasters for professionals and the English Corners for a wide range of people. Aside from that - there's the WenLinJie street near Yunnan University - lots of expat cafes and associated loiterers of all kinds.

I once met a professional orchestra conductor from Canada (reviewed in gokm) and his wife - sipping coffee - so there are all sorts of interesting people. Some may be snarky online, but are genuinely nice in person.

Hope you have a long and pleasant experience with your Yunnan move. It's an incredibly interesting place if you come with an open mind and no hangups about the fact this ain't home...It can be frustrating or amusing, depending on your frame of mind at the time.

I appreciate your response. It was very respectful and informative. I was in China in 2011. I arrived in Beijing. Visited Tianamen Square, and walked many streets. Then I took the train to Wuhan. Hunan fascinated me. The most memorable experience was an all day stroll in the park along the Yangtze River. There was so much to see I could hardly take it all in. then I took the train back to Beijing. I wanted to visit the Great Wall, but it did not work out. Then I took the train to Shenzhen. I did not know what I was in for. The trip took 24 hours. it was brutal. I loved Shenzhen! I was treated so warmly by the Chinese people. I fell in love with China and the Chinese people. I miss China everyday. Believe me if I sell this ranch and am able to relocate in Kunming, I ain't going to have any hang ups, that this isn't home. I know There is a lot so adjustment, but I have made a circle of QQ friends, who will meet me at the airport and help me settle in

Whether or not you will enjoy living in Kunming depends on many things such as your age, prior experiences, expectations, whether you are single or married, have kids, etc. Kunming is pretty laid back. English corners are terrible because most of them are the same. They ask you the same questions over and over and it gets pretty boring and annoying.
