I have seen various "Gortex" coats on foreigner street (there's a place near Mandarin Books). They are selling for around 400-500 kuai, and I'm just wondering if anyone knows if they are there real McCoy, or if they are Mickey Mouse.

Some are real I guess but the price is very real too. If you buy them om a market they're not,, that's not saying you can't get a decent jacket there with almost the same qualities. Either way at the end of January it starts getting warmer so unless you are thinking about travelling to Zhongdian or something like that it might not be worth forking over 500 kuai for Goretex.

Bet they are fake. Real Gortex does not come that cheap, even to the Chinese factories who make the jackets. Its a product owned by Gore, and as far as I know only made by Gore. There are other waterproof, breathable fabrics, but Goretex is arguably the best. Depending on how you intend to use the jacket of course, it may not matter to you that it is fake, as it is generally still waterproof, though often not breathable. Check the seams to see if they are sealed though. Nothing worse than a leaky waterproof jacket.

For that price they are all fake. I bought original Gore-Tex Alpine in Kunming last year and paid 1800 RMB. There is no comparison between fake and original.
