www.telegraph.co.uk/ not all of the news stories are behind the paywall. News on the Coronavirus has not been behind the paywall so far.
Microsoft News, accessible if you have Win10 from the Windows icon bottom left of the screen. Also available by pressing the windows button on some keyboards.
PLEASE add to this list if you know of other sources that are not behind the GFW.
Also worth mentioning is that China does not block access to wide range of news sites that are in languages other than English or other world languages.

- Wikipedia via Bing: Entering "2019-20 coronavirus outbreak" as the search term in the mobile version of cn.bing.com (but not in the desktop version) calls up the full text of the relevant Wikipedia article within the Bing search results page. Incidentally, most of the articles on Wikipedia can be accessed in this way without a proxy.

Computer engineers at Johns Hopkins University created a nifty online dashboard that allows the public to track the spread of new coronavirus worldwide. I do not know if a proxy is needed. Loads slow.
