I'm retired from teaching so I don't care if I pressed the wrong key(s). :-)

To bring it back to the original question: I believe 75-100rmb per hour is pretty common fee for learning Chinese from a qualified local.

For the other direction, learning English from a native speaker, I think 200 per hour has become the norm.

The better language schools won't teach English (qualified and experienced 'native speaking foreign teacher') for less than 400~500 per hour. Privately, 200 per hour is the starting point for an OK teacher... 300+ for a good one. If you only need a language exchange partner or a student teacher then of course it will be cheaper or even free. Remember that you get what you pay for.

Assuming a rate of 200/hr, it takes a minimum of 1000 hrs to brings a non-speaker up to a level where they can be semi-coherent in an English environment, that would mean a minimum investment of 200k. Is that realistic or sustainable?
