I have three cats at home, all female. One is in heat right now for the first time and (to all my apologies) since about 2 Months now. I went to three different vets and the answers I got to my/ her problem are outragous.

First, denyal: There is no problem with cats in heat. Somehow right, but... due to the constant ability of mating the uterus undergoes changes, that might (if not will) lead to cancer. 2 out of three doctors deny this fact.

Second, avoiding: If my cat has a problem I should simply return her and get a new one (Really. I got this answer at the Kunming Animal Hospital, KAH).

Third, A solution: Mate the cat. But for me there are enough kittens here in China, they do not need more.

Fourth, an Apologie: My favoured vet told me that he knows waht to do, but his instruments are not good enough to monitor an anesthesia of my cat because she's to young.

Really, I feel horrible right now. I love all of my animals and never tought that I actually do cruelty to them.

I asked the vets for hormones, but these are not available here in China because they aren't licensed. I asked if they can spay my cat between the cycles, but no one want's to. And, if I mate her I don't know what to do with the kittens because I can't let free onto the street.

So what's left. I searched the internet for days. Came up with two solutions I really don't like. One includes a Q-Tip and should not be further discussed here, the other one is giving your cat human birth control pill. But both solutions include a not too small risk for the cat.

That's why, before I see myself taking any of these measures, I'd like to ask if anybody encountered the same problem with her or his cat.

I think this is how it begins. The stories you hear about 50 year old unmarried women barricaded inside their house together with their 100+ cats screaming at kids in the street through their windows untill the day the RSPCA breaks down the door. Don't tell me you weren't warned. All the best.

Actually, I've had my cat spayed about a year and a half ago at the Animal Hospital next to the Xiyuan round-about/interchange thing-a-majigy run by the Agricultural University. I think it costs about 150RMB and can be done on the spot with out appointments. They make you sign a waiver first in case something goes tragically wrong. Luckily it didn't. However, I might be a fluke and got lucky. Given that this is China, the hospital, in my opinion, is as good as it gets here in kunming.

What exactly do cat do when in heat? Cant you just let them stay in heat till they get over it? If not, you could teach it the 'joys' of abstinence. You could mould it into a cat of moral virtue. You could even fashion it a little chastity belt if you wanted to force the issue. Or if you just wanted to be a really cruel b**stard.

Fifth: cat soup

my baby cat was in heat for the first time about a month ago. I couldn't spay her before that cuz doctor suggested me to wait until her first heat was over. About 3 weeks ago I took her to the vet of Nongda (农大宠物医院）at 一二一大街。it took her two weeks to fully recover. it was heartbreaking to see her suffer after the surgery, but she'd be in constant pain if she wasn't spayed. so it was worth it. now she'll be a happy kitten forever

hey, regardless all the "heat", your story is quite amusing. I have a 2 years old male cat, he was castrated about a year ago but he still humps a stuffed toy animal at nights haha, hes a big coward so i dont think he will help your cat, but if u want to give it a try - let me know...

Today my boyfriend took our pregnant cat to that Vet at 农大宠物医院）at 一二一大街.

He told the doctor that our cat is extremly shy and doesnt like humans that much and that they should be careful when they open the box.
Doctor opened the box, looked inside and turned around to get whatever. Cat jumped out of the box and escaped. Now she is somewhere on the street around that area and probably very scared because we are living in North and she is not used to any of this noise and traffic.

This stupid Doctor didnt even say Sorry or anything. Just returned the already payed money without saying anything.

I am not very happy about this!

Sorry to hear about your cat's great escape - but welcome to china. Most chinese are deaf and only hear "blah blah blah blah" when you speak - and then proceed to do what they think is right anyway. For those of you taking jittery animals to the vet - make sure you have the animal leashed or harnessed (for those who deign collars).

FYI - my 4yo son took off like a bullet the first time he went for immunization - he was 4yo. In case anyone asks, I waited until he was 4yo for health reasons - in my opinion (I studied one course in immunology as a univ elective) not a good idea to do immunizations until the kids immune system is more mature - post-birth immunizations aside - and assuming your kids to mix too much with the general population.
