I am looking for some stock pieces of lumber for a table top. Finished on two sides will do, but something with some meat (2" thickness or more). If need be, it can be finished already, but I would prefer to do that myself. Does anyone know about a place/neighborhood where I can go have a look?

I'm also looking for wood for picture frames, or old frames already made, plus glass, wire, glazier points, wood glue, finisher nails, etc. Any woodworking supply stores in town that have these items (and preferably more)?

The biggest wood market in Kunming is out west, almost as far as Xishan. It's very much wood-oriented, not woodworking tool oriented. It's on the north side of the G56 raised expressway, just after you pass Guangfu Lu.

It can be hard to find traditional timber in large and predictable quantities, instead you are likely to find:

1. Very large blocks of hardwood (2"+ thickness) that have been pre-treated (cheaply) and cut to a range of shapes or left with natural curves. For a large, table-sized block, delivered, expect to pay around 2000元

2. Engineered timbers. These are quick growing (usually pine) timber-based boards with specific processing that are often full of glues and have been implicated as releasing carcinogenic gases. Use in a well ventilated location or seal well with veneer or treatment. Thickneses up to at least 0.5" or so are available, this stuff is very strong and cost effective. Sheets of standard size (very roughly ~2.5m x 1.5m from memory) will go for roughly the 100-300元 range, depending upon type.

As for your other points, wire you can find anywhere. Glass is no longer preferred in modern picture frames (heavy, breakage, UV permissive), instead UV-resistant PVC laminates are used. You can order this stuff from Taobao and have people cut it for you. Wire you can get anywhere. Glazier points buy on Taobao or just take your PVC to a framer and have them do it.
