There was a pho place. It didn't work. Then there was another place that served so so pho. It didn't work either. Vietnamese cuisine fails in Kunming, which is depressing.

Someone open a pu mian 铺面 shop, even though it will fail too, at least I can get a few bowls before that.

A review on TripAdvisor about a hotel in Bhutan warned that there was a large Chinese tourist group and the hotel was only serving a Chinese buffet, no local food.

Would be interesting to see stats on what percentage of Chinese people actually like trying different foods, apart from fast food chains. Even when they travel, it seems they tend to seek out Chinese food.

Maybe in 2nd and 3rd tier cities, 5%? And in 1st tier cities much higher?

Chinese tours of other countries try to organise Chinese food for dinner every night (of course, they may struggle to find Chinese breakfast in other countries). I guess its because its a safer bet, keep everyone fed and happy. When Chinese talk about foreign food, it seems that Thai is the only cuisine they have a real interest in trying, I guess because it's different, but not too different! Kind of like some Italians are happy to eat some French food on holiday in France.

Visiting Pokhara, Nepal, for a week with Chinese friends and most nights we went to the Chinese restaurant. Authentic yes, delicious yes, but where's the adventure??

I'd usually hang out at the Samosa stand, slowly eating, seeing Nepali locals chat over a quick samosa or other...wonderful times...
