OK, I give up. I have seen the term - Wumao - used several times on this and several other threads but I have no idea what it means or its origin. Can someone explain please.

1 - so we should all go self sensor ourselves before micky reports us and remember the wumao are watching you

2 - maybe not wumao but for sure is a 2B.

Somehow I do not think 0.5 yuan applies in this same sentence. Does anyone know the meaning of this term?

Fifty Cent Party (五毛党 Wǔ Máo Dǎng): A group of paid Internet commentators who post opinions in defense of government policy.

It is said the 五毛党 is organized by the government but I have no idea. I do know that on some Western websites which allow pretty much free access and commentary, there are loyal, and vocal, Chinese patriots who work hard to spread propaganda with two aims: 1) criticize Western institutions/ideologies and 2) promote the history, culture and ideology of China.

It's a term to describe people who are paid to watch internet forums and write pro- Chinese comments (supposedly 5 jiao per post, hence the name)

In my opinion, threads overtly attempting to provoke criticism of China, such as this one, are ill advised. The OP is deliberately attempting to pick fights and stir up trouble.

As foreigners we may have complaints, opinions or comments on some aspects Chinese society but clearly most have reasons to stay and make a life in China.

When a Westerner exhibits overly sensitive concerns about criticism of China and Chinese, aggressively mischaracterizes the words and opinions of his fellow expats, he is playing to the xenophobia of many Chinese. Not an intelligent thing to do.

Geezer and Kevlar, thanks for your reply (meaning and origin). I initially asked my wife for the meaning but she never heard of it. Now it makes sense in the way it was used in the other threads. Now my wife can research, learn and teach me.

Recent article on Fifty Cent Party (五毛党 Wǔ Máo Dǎng). Claims China's government fabricates about 488 million social media posts every year.

Source is suspect
