I have seen so many negative, harshly-critical posts here, by people who, as far as I know, have voluntarily chosen to live in China. So, just for some balance, I would like to ask you in this thread: what you do like about China?
I have seen so many negative, harshly-critical posts here, by people who, as far as I know, have voluntarily chosen to live in China. So, just for some balance, I would like to ask you in this thread: what you do like about China?
Here are some balance for your reading pleasure:

Enjoy!
I like the way that most women seem to feel safe getting around by themselves day and night. In many other countries this is not the case. I like how public space is vital and used by people all the time. I like the Chinese dedication to bettering themselves through education. I like how old people go out and exercise and socialise rather than rotting in armchairs like many old people in the UK do. I like how parents try their best to give their children the best start in life (though I feel they push too hard in some cases). I like that the essentials of life (food, rent, utilities) are affordable.
Not much to like about eastern China, but Yunnan has awesome weather and clean air( not cities).
There is a weather chart which shows particulates in the air....NW Yunnan has the cleanest air in Asia, compared as clean as north canada,
On balance, and without engaging in culture worship, I like the people.
1).....violence
2)....disregard for [any] life
3)....complete lack of courtesy, ethics and manners
4)....lying and cheating
5).....lack of hygiene standards, plus blaming every disease on foreigners
6)...xenophobia
7) ...the appreciation of Asian neighbours
8)....the complete in-existence of food safety...the fact that you have to bring in, each bowl of noodles for testing, so you know if you survive.
9)....for kids not allowed to have a childhood.
10)...The unconditional love Chinese have for everything different.......if it has money written in it.
11) ...The harmony, China can't seem to find anywhere.
12) ...traditional marriage, of cheating, six month right after wedding day, going to KTV and having a 2nd wife.
13) Living expenses, more expensive than in Germany [supposedly the most expensive country in Europe???] Although not offering anything of quality...but a lot of inflated prices, over nothing.
14) ...my favourite, -MIANZI. Turning a potentially beautiful country in to a smoking pile.
15) ...Chinese beer!!! WTF. if you don't want beer, in a beer, then do it like the Belgians do, just add fruits and sh*t, or just serve chashui.
16) Chinese alcohol, tasteless strong, ridiculously priced urine.
17) Smoking, in closed spaces with hopefully as many children inside, as possible.
18) The lack of self-discipline and patience. Nothing better than seeing three people pushed into an empty bus.
19) Lack or personal hygiene, nobody need perfumed, deodo-rated but a bar of soap is 1.5 RMB, why not use it twice a day. Same with toothbrushes & toothpaste (ca. 10RMB) a good investment.
20) TCM, woul actually be great if it wouldn't be full of pesticides and so crazy expensive,...for doing so little -so late!
21) Disregard for environmental protection.
22) Not giving a crap about anything, unless for themselves.
....I will continue after work...
What I hate about China
1) Yunnan weather, too good to be true.
2) Food, when safe and reasonably flavoured.
3) The true friends you can get here.
4) My wife and kid
5) Taobao, f*cking taobao, sweet little taobao, although a knockoff hybrid unwanted child [stolen] of JinDong/Ebay and Amazon, it is still the best product of thievery, to enjoy in daily life.
11) Yunnan Arabica coffee and green tea. Green tea less due to the huge amount of chemicals sprayed on it.
....oh did I mix them up? ...lol
Seems to me you don't like China. Why are you writing here?
1. same old trolls popping up with new alias. 2. same old troll bait threads. 3. same old people taking the bait. 4. same old responses from same old people. 5. same old person demanding same old justification from others.
Good point, Dazzer, tho I think you overstate the troll element & the 'same old' trolls with new aliases - anyway, seems posters on gokunming, most of whom are foreign and most of whom are from 'Western' countries, maintain the same obsessions. With all the focus on 'Chinese' this & 'Chinese' that, perhaps a bit more attention as to why this is the case, without blaming it all on 'the Chinese' - certain aspects of this focus surely have a great deal to do with the local expat mentality and not just with the cultural environment within which we all live. What we like about China surely has something to do with who we are, and not just about where we are.
Why bother, these threads are just started so we can say blah blah and then the OP can reply and say 'no Kunming is really great!' etc.
I like Kunming by the way, no real probs apart from the driving. Any others I can just compare to similar back in the UK.
