Western dessert in Kunming

kurtosis (86 posts) • 0

A Chinese friend of mine living in Kunming would really like to know what desserts in the west taste like. Unfortunately, he doesn't have money for traveling abroad (and also doesn't know English for that matter).

So I'm wondering, is there any place in Kunming where he could get authentic western desserts? He's especially interested in french Éclaires, as he saw some online.

In Chengdu I got lucky at Walmart - does the Walmart in Kunming have good & fresh desserts available?

not sure about Walmart. The Prague Cafe or The Wicker Basket would be a good place to start.

Also have a walk along Wenlin Jie/Wenhua Xiang, and also the area behind McDonalds on Hongshan Dong Lu, there are several western cafes and restaurants. Slice of heaven further up Hongshan Dong Lu, specialises in cakes and the like.

BTW eclaires are not a dessert, but a pastry/cream-cake. Very similar to Beard Papa.

Thanks, a lot!
I've been at Prague Cafe and Slice of Heaven myself (but only for food never for dessert or, well, pastry). I've never heard of Wicker Basket. Definitely also going to check it out myself the next time I make it to Kunming!

I always love a few of the cakes they do in Starbucks. I know they're not specialists but some are good :)

Not my thing even though I did spend a couple of weeks trying to bake a perfect one recently lol (about a 20% success rate) but I'd recommend the new york cheesecake and the chocolate fudge brownie :)

+1 for Starbucks brownies. They are delicious!

French Cafe also has cakes and pretty good strawberry tarts. There's also Salvador's banana split. And if you don't feel like restricting foreign desserts to Western ones only, there are also Indian desserts next door at Cacaja.
