Did not go alone. I did not like the abused, depressed elephant for one thing. If one think throwing water around on each other is exciting then go for it. Did you know the majority of people working tat those minority events are not even minority people? Like the dancing girls. They are Han girls who dress up like various minority peoples. One week they are a Bai dancer, the next a Dai dancer. Totally true. I feel it is all so phoney baloney, making an Indian rain dance on a reservation look totally authentic.
I think the occurrence of non-ethnic dancers masquerading as ethnic members for the benefit of tourists varies considerably. I went to the Ximeng festival quite a few years ago and I didn't detect any of the hundred or so dancers as non-Wa. Of course I could have been wrong, but at that one, anyway, I don't think I was.
On the other hand, I think a lot of the choreography of the dances was lilkely produced by Han.
Remember that these are mostly tourist events, designed to please tourists - ie, give them what they want. Most tourists are Han.
