Apple really had something going on with OSX, iPod and iPhone. But now the market for desktop systems is smaller, stand alone mp3 players are unnecessary and their iPhone has been successfully copied by countless other companies. Asshole Steve Jobs has kicked the bucket and like it or not he was a driving force behind these products. I don't see a watch with an 18 hour battery life being anything "revolutionary".
Apple products do look lovely, but unlike others here I have not found all of their products to hold up or work as well as others claim. Plus they intentionally do asshole things like making batteries and memory non serviceable. They say it's to make their devices thinner, but it's really just to lock the users into their service plans and upgrades.
I do like OSX, but in the case of my laptop I went with a $300 12" Acer rather than a 12" Crapbook Air because the hardware specs were more or less the same. Sure, after 4 years my Acer is on its last legs, but I remember my old $2000 15" Crapbook Pro fell apart after only 3! I baby my systems too.
And the price of this useless shit - 10,000 US dollars. You got ot be a moron to buy one of these.
@faraday
Mobile phones consist of two independent parts, that "talk" to each other - the radio or telephone part and the smartphone part that abstractly "sits on top" of the radio.
There are a plethora of programmed interfaces that enable the "smart phone" to communicate and control the phone...and vice versa (such as ring tones).
So - NO ubuntu wouldn't work as a safe solution for a smartphone.
Mobile phone software must be stripped down of all non-essential libraries (bloatware), modified with Application Program Interfaces (APIs), and then there's the "real-time" element - which is a technical discussion unto itself.
One could probably load any desktop/laptop operating system, as long as it's compatible with the mobile phone's CPU - but it would probably run like crap...assuming it even fit into the storage area.
Do not know about you but being a old Unix and now Linux guy .... I can any 10.6 Mac or newer and be able to do my work.... And they just work. I might need to get make a few things ... But I can work. Iphone fits into this Eco system out of the box as well. Tried a Google phone htc Samsung and iOcean and some other cheaper android phones .... Hardware wise none have survived. Fun to cook roms etc ... But I worked in IT for about 30 years. Now I just want to turn it on.
Now going back to hardware life span. Jesus I have first gen PowerBook still working a bondi blue iMac still working... G4 Frankenstein still working ... At work we have about 150 Mac minis running as image servers still plugging away... Did install Linux on them .... Never really saw issues with Mac hardware. Of course stuff breaks... But Apple care was always a great service. Biggest problem was always hard drives.
Now about the watch ... Interesting applications being developed... But meh
Laotou, seems then like there is no safe option, apart from having a dumb phone and staying off the net (impossible).
Hfcampo, totally agree with what u wrote on this thread. And all this BS in US and EU last year about net neutrality is totally bogus. It's just a question of time until you NEED a 10k or more device just to use the net at all. This smart watch makes me think, we're one step close to the movie "logans run" (implant a "watch" at birth, turned off when you've passed your best-before date, at 35, then you're toast)
"And the price of this useless shit - 10,000 US dollars. You got ot be a moron to buy one of these."
that was the gold version. some people do have money and can afford gold watches and want to buy gold watches. it wouldn't be the first time someone buys a gold watch. but it would be the first smart gold watch.
just because you can't afford a gold watch doesn't mean you need to poison cyber-space with your negativity. i, for one, cannot afford a 10K gold watch. but i'm at peace with it. all you're doing is displaying that you're a petty little man. you can't afford a 10K gold watch, so that means everyone should stop buying gold watches?
even that clown in the disclose.tv video who is ranting against the watch admits that he has an iphone 4&5.
If I wouild spend $10,000 on a gold watch it would be a Rolex that will last for years and years and years and years and still keep it's value. Not some piece of shit "smartwatch" that will be dated within 3-6 months. Come on be real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just watch the Russell Brand video . You brings out very good points. Good video. The Apple smartphone is just a watch if you don't have an Iphone. There's another smartwatch that is better called the Pebble smartwatch. Look it up.
I would never be so STUPID as to pay a single penny for a watch now that everyone carries a cell phone that displays the time. Only morons buy watches. A watch is as obsolete as a typewriter nowadays. Only people who want to show off their stupidity buy and wear watches in this day age.
Even if I had millions to spare I definitely would not buy a useless watch.
well, clearly the execs at apple don't see it that way.
and the millions of poeple who will buy it.
and the thing about technology is that is that it's not linear. watches WERE dead. or so everyone thought. but they've been resurrected from the dead. like jesus.
never count out jesus or tech.
