Warning of new attack threat?

Can anyone verify this apparent warning from US Embassy of a terror attack planned for Kunming?

www.lostlaowai.com/[...]

The message refers to "media reports", but the only I can find so far is from Epoch Times - not the most solid of news sources I think. Can anyone provide any more info?

Notice on US Embassy Beijing website:

beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn/02132015u.html

"The United States Embassy in Beijing is aware of media reports alleging that terrorists may be planning to launch an attack in Kunming, Yunnan Province over the Lunar New Year period. The Embassy has not been able to verify the accuracy of this report."

Found this notice Sat 1:12 AM, Kunming time.

I received an email from the Consulate about this and I am currently in the US.

I have no reason to doubt that it was a legitimate email from the US list but I did not pursue further checking.

Geezer, that warning was posted on the US Embassy website (Beijing) under travel advisories.

The Canadian Embassy website says there are no travel advisories in effect but always be careful.

I did get an email from the Canadian Consulate yesterday warning of bird flue in East and South-East China.

Al, yes and I think this is the key phrase: "is aware of media reports alleging." Seems not have strength of intel. I provided the URL and quoted part of the statement. My assessment is either the PBS makes headlines or the terrorists do.

My experience says the only way an attack will succeed is if the bad guys are tight lipped. And, I don't think Uighurs will be sitting around chatting with Hanzu about their plans.

It's unlikely that any such acts would affect you directly, Kunming's a big town - there's something about the ugly fear and inherent drama and news coverage of acts by terrorists, as well as the ability to defy authority, that makes them effective - don't help them out by obsessing - more practical, if you're over 65, to worry about your first heart attack, especially if you're a smoker. .

It is normal SOP for the security services to have a heightened alert states on the anniversaries of terror events or the birthdays of terrorist leaders' deaths etc. Perhaps it is some notification within these services that was picked up somewhere else.
March 1 will be the anniversary of Kunming railway station incident. I have no doubt that security forces will be extra vigilant and conspicuous on that day.

@tiger: probably a good thing. They might also pay attention to the ongoing activities of the tobacco industry.
