proverb: "wise men learn more from fools than fools learn from wise men."

all this talk of servitude and slavery. someone definatley has their head stuck up the 19th century. dont equate expats who locals who use an ayi with your warped world view. probably watching too much downton. we call these ayi domestic help they are paid well by local standards and treated well in china coz they can just find another job or piss in the soup. the hk case is extreme and asshols like that will treat everyone they see as below them like that, why? coz they are asshles. but they would not get away with it here.

@Dazzer: You're right, they would not get away with it here. I think one reason for this is that the ayis etc. in Hong Kong are not Chinese, and that there is considerable arrogance in Hong Kong towards non-Chinese Asians. I agree that ayis here are paid well by local standards (I'm guessing that you mean that westerners here pay well by local standards) - but of course one can always question the local standards.

What I know is the following:

There are agencies that are reliable. Of course you need to know which agency that is. Also do you still need to interview the applicant.
Full-time house-keeping (5 or 6 days a week from morning 8:30 till 7:30 pm (this is with cooking) is usually around 2700 to 3500 per month. Depending on the level of work.

Idea of full-time housekeeping seems a bit much for ordinary mortals to need, but I'm willing to hear about necessary exceptions (e.g., medical).

@Alien Congratulations on being appointed Minister for Personal Finances and Expenditure.

Please be advised I'm having my haircut tomorrow. I know I could do it myself but I've injured my arm and can't reach the back of head so I hope you consider this a necessary exception. Oh, other services I may require: Haier engineer for washing machine. I could wash by hand or maybe learn how to fix it myself but I am busy and so, again, I hope you can make an exception for this. Thanks in anticipation.

PS. My friend says you're just a nosy bastard but I explained to her that we are in a part of the world were self-appointed clever people are entitled to exert control and dispense advice. I've told her to sit and write two pages of self-criticism.

Best wishes,

Sycophant-in-Chief

@nnoble: Dude, I am going to plagiarize "where self-appointed clever people are entitled to exert control and dispense advice."

Well put indeed.

I don't understand the response, I think but I am not sure, maybe.

@Alien
Define "mortals". Would that be a single guy with no children living alone or a two career married with three children household?
