Hello, I'm a musician, double bass player specialized in Jazz who wants to move and work in China, maybe in Kunming. My idea is to present my solo project which consists of playing cover songs (jazz, bossa nova, pop) with double bass, percussion and voice. It's a great show to present in theaters, live music clubs, hotels and restaurants. As a bass player I also want to collaborate with other musicians in China. I am also a music teacher and I would like to work teaching music, guitar and/or bass (English speaking). Is it Kunming a nice place to do it? Are there opportunities for expat musicians? Kunming has a jazz music scene? Do you have some comments or suggestions? Thanks a lot.

can you make a living? yes! can you sustain a visa....probably not..

My idea, if possible, is to stay for one year or two, and get a job so I can get the work visa. It's difficult to get a musician (or teacher) job?

I know a few people that work as artists and performers in China.

The girlfriend of one of those blokes [a percussionist], told me that you can get a visa. Which one or what you have to prove or show that you are an artist, I did't ask.

It's possible if you have a bachelor degree, you could easily work as music teacher or get hired by an 'Orff' school or an institute that offers music therapy or music related courses. Even university if you have a degree in music related studies.

Also you could promote your own curriculum or music course to a school and see if they are willing to sponsor a visa for you.

I tought drama classes and film making in an elementary school in Beijing and they were very helpful. I got commission for enrollment in my class. Coz they offered a package deal. So it's possible.

If you are not in China yet, try to contact schools that specialize in arts and music, it's the easiest way to get a visa legally.

So you may "have to" teach for a little while, when you get here first.

After your arrival in China, you could find a band or conservatory [depending on your skills and background] and see how they get their visa and residence permit. It's usually easier to do it from China, than abroad.
