Can't find info on where to find free-range meat in KM. Also, does any group here do organic food runs to Haobao Ecological Farm 好宝箐生态农业园 ? I know Salvadors does, but, I'd like to go there. Thank you.

Metro usually has a good selection of Mongolian Beef. Kind of expensive and not sure if free range. I have used with good results.
I haven't been to Metro yet, but i'll definitely check it out.
If anyone else has advice on where to buy quality organic fruits, veggies & meats, it would be greatly appreciated!! :)
I'm pretty sure free-range chickens are available in many rural communities - however, I'm not too clear about when a chicken is considered to be free-range - obviously they're going to be fed by the farmers, and I don't know what they're fed - but anyway they're not the battery chickens favored by 'efficient' industrial agriculture in the US and, I think, elsewhere, and the meat tends to be a bit tough.
Where does the local not-very-good goat meat come from?
Chinese free range chickens here are mostly soup chickens. These are easily recognizable by their small size and skinny shape. Bursting with flavour but tough as old boots. These are the favoured chicken for many local families. The big fat chickens are factory reared, and probably full of hormones and anti-biotics (or so my Ch family tell me).
Agree with tigertiger about the quality of chickens.
I'm staying at family in remote mountains at the moment, and the chickens are walking free outside the house during day, eating bugs and worms from the ground.
People seem to also feed them green food collected from the countryside (slashed to small pieces) or mashed corn.
For night the chickens come back to a small shelter.
