Mushroom hotpot

b galipeau (48 posts) • 0

Have heard many times about a spectacular all wild mushroom hotpot in Kunming, but not sure of the name or location. There are three such restaurants in the southern part of town posted in the listings but no reviews or descriptions have been given. Any thoughts or recommendations on these or others?

Edit: Found this 2010 article on the Guanshang mushroom district: www.gokunming.com/[...]

Anyone have any particular tips on the abundance of places there to try?

You are in luck as it is (qi zong - I think that is the name) mushroom season at the moment. But the

these mushrooms are not cheap. About 200-300 rmb a kilo at the market. Most restaurants will have them on the menu.
Personally, I think the mushroom hotpot is overrated. The usual hype over seasonal foods. Basically, it is a mushroom soup. Nice, but nothing spectacular.
My favourite use of qi zong is when the are shredded, fried, and then preserved in the oil. This is a very flavoursome addition to a bowl of 'dry' noodles, soy sauce, and chives. The remaining flavoured oil is also good for cooking.
NB some of the hotpots contain bacon.
