Rodolfo and Petrita live apart in dilapidated Madrid, and would like nothing more than to have a little apartment to share. Although their salaries are too low to allow this, Rodolfo realises his neighbour Doña Martina might not have long left, and according to Spanish rent-control law, if he marries her he could inherit the lease when she dies. Petrita has her misgivings, and so does Rodolfo.
