Editor's note: The images in this post are low-resolution examples of a much larger number of full-quality photographic prints on display right now at the Yunnan Provincial Library.
The photo exhibition is being sponsored by the China branch of the international conservation organization The Nature Conservancy, which captured the images in three nature reserves in Yunnan over the course of a full year as part of an effort to catalogue the province's stunning natural bounty. Read on for more information and a full background statement from the group's Kunming office about the exhibition.
From The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is working under a grant from the EU-China Biodiversity Program (ECBP) to create a new biodiversity conservation and sustainable development model in northwest Yunnan. Under the grant agreement, TNC will work with the Yunnan Provincial Government and two local government agencies to establish two National Parks at Laojun Mountain and Meili Snow Mountain which will incorporate models and experience from all over the world into China.
We have developed a preliminary information system for the two parks, but there are still crucial gaps in baseline biodiversity information as well as image data needed for planning in the two parks.
As part of the effort to fill these gaps we have turned to Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition, an innovative method to record and assess biodiversity through natural photography. The survey records will provide not only important scientific records for assessment, but also valuable materials for advocacy for and exhibition of biodiversity in Yunnan Province.
Funded by ECBP, TNC invited a group of professional and passionate wildlife photographers to profile the biodiversity of Meili Snow Mountain National Park, Laojun Mountain National Park and Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and take thousands of photos of the parks' rarely seen wildlife.
To share the photos with the public and in an effort to build public awareness about Yunnan's stunning environment, TNC is holding the following photo exhibition in Kunming at the provincial library near Green Lake Park.
Name: The Beauty of Nature—Biodiversity Photography Exhibition
