    • American conservative group makes inroads into China's classrooms

I don't think high schools and universities are going to have a week long session of role-playing. It will be just another pamphlet given to students along with the current material, and then likely never be discussed in class beyond a few minutes.

Besides that, discussing family values in high school and college is a wee bit late. Heck, in my rural conservative hometown we started studying sex education in 4th grade.

Another point is that the English should probably be "addicted to" and not "mentally dependent on"

    • Welcome to the new GoKunming.com!

The layout seems a little unbalanced, but not bad. I think it's because some text that doesn't have it's own boxed in background seems lost, like it's just floating around. Forums need to be updated to have threaded posts.. a rating system would be great. Even if it would something as simple as marking posts as "troll/flame" or "off topic".

I think the shortage of water is of usable water. I've heard that Dianchi lake is so bad that they can't even use the water for industrial usage. So I'm guessing, or at least hoping the water they use is ok for grass, but not for drinking... probably sewage water.

haha... the schools "quarantine" is useless. Students regularly leave the school. There's even a path between the bushes where they leave.

Many students have already gone home. Supposedly they're all supposed to come back now and sit around to do nothing.

Plus they let everyone and anyone talk at the main gate.

Seems strange to me. The only reason that I know of requiring someone to "renew" their student visa like this is if they change schools. Is your original residence permit/visa through Yunnan Nationalities University?

Depends, most nicer places want at least 6 months rent in advance, especially if you use a real estate agent. The lease is normally 6 months to 1 year.

With the housing bubble, and high rent there are a lot of greedy landlords out there now... They even have a name for them in Chinese, but I forget what it is now.

Some landlords will let you pay monthly, but most often times this is when you rent directly from the landlord.

I like the food at the Wicker Basket in Beichen. I don't know if they have wine or not. There are other foreign restaruants nearby... Sandras, Samoana Cafe are the ones I can think off the top of my head. Just check the listings on gokunming.com

Excellent atmosphere and food. The small store of imported food and fresh baked goods is also quite nice.

    • Kunming > Ideal Education

Does not provide any textbooks for part-time English teachers. Classes are scheduled only a few days ahead of time. Textbooks are inappropriate for students. School management and teachers show up 10 minutes before classes start on the weekend. Students are not separated based on their language level. Headmaster of the Beijing road campus will show up 5 minutes before classes on the weekend, and will give you a new class to teach without any warning. So par for the course if you want to be a dancing monkey. However, if you want to plan your classes with the regular teachers, expect any sort of consistent schedule, or any assistance what-so-ever then stay away. Oh, and their pay is below average.

I was promised I could take the classes I wanted at the west campus in July, but come August they wouldn't let me attend the classes I wanted. They forced me to pay tuition saying the police would send me home otherwise. Never arranged classes. Have so far refused to refund my tuition in August, October, and December. I finally changed schools in October after not having a single class. The reason for not refunding my tuition? I have no idea, they have only stated that the director responsible has been fired for it. Is that even legal?

Management seems good, the teachers are good so far. Their could be a bit more in coordinating the class content between teachers, but the classes themselves are good.

Almost every school in Kunming has a low satisfaction rate with "foreign experts" so perhaps they are just more direct and honest about expressing it.
