I am relocating to Kunming soon and dont know alot about the area.
What is a good area to live in.
Is there any areas i should aviod?
I would prefer to be close to other expats as my chinese is a bit limited at this point.

North part of the city is good! Green Lake and the universities area is also very good but I think it's a little difficult to find a suitable apartment if you have some picky requirements.

How is the area around the Zhenqing Central Square, Kunming Hotel, and stuff? Basically the intersection of Baita and Dongfeng east road. Any opinions appreciated.
Of one were living in this nice north part of the city you speak of, or the green lake and universities area, would it be difficult to commute back to that Baita-Dongfeng intersection area?
I think I'm going to end up in that area during the day for work/study, but am wondering whether or not I should try to live there or not... or live in a different are and commute.
Your advice is appreciated as always!
@saikyo: I used to live in that area. Though it's very central, the area is surprisingly lacking in facilities such as cheap restaurants and shops. It would be easy to commute there from the north side of town, because of all the buses and dedicated bus lanes running up and down Beijing Lu.
Crosstown from the Green Lake / Jianshe Lu area is a little bit more of a hassle, but it is, after all, a rather compact town.
Basically the area you mentioned is very good, surroundings are lots of shopping malls, hotels and western restaurants. But I think it's a little difficult to get back there from the north part or the green lake and universities area because lots of foreigners like walking distance or direct bus route. You can take No. 67 or 57 if you commute from the north or transfer K1, 23 to Bus No. 5. You can take Bus No. 1 or No. 5 if you commute from the universites or the Green Lake area. If you work/study around the Zhenqing Central Square, I suggest you live around there, some apartments there are ok like 86街U2公寓, 汇都国际 and others.
